The African waterproof footwear market fell to $X in 2022, waning by -7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X pairs) and Morocco (X pairs) represented roughly 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X pairs), mixing up an 18% share of total exports.

In general, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X pairs in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, waterproof footwear imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. In value terms, Ghana ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mauritania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 38% of total imports. Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Lesotho, Uganda, Rwanda, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Guinea and Somalia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per pair in 2022, declining by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per pair in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per pair), while Somalia ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.
