The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of welded and cold-formed sections of steel increased by 55% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 94%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 56% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to welded and cold-formed steel sections imports into Nigeria stood at +32.5%. At the same time, Morocco (+40.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+28.8%), Equatorial Guinea (+27.8%), Mozambique (+10.5%), Zimbabwe (+7.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-4.7%), Algeria (-7.1%), Namibia (-10.9%), Angola (-12.4%) and Ghana (-16.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+53 p.p.), Morocco (+2.4 p.p.), Equatorial Guinea (+2.3 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia, Angola and Ghana saw its share reduced by -3.9%, -3.9% and -6.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported welded and cold-formed sections of steel in Africa, comprising 18% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4.3% share.
In Nigeria, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (-3.4% per year) and Angola (-13.7% per year).
