In 2022, overseas shipments of wheat and meslin flour decreased by -17.2% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wheat and meslin flour exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt represented the main exporter of wheat and meslin flour in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 29% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Ghana (11%), Rwanda (10%), Uganda (10%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.6%). The following exporters - Lesotho (X tons), Togo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Burundi (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+46.5%), Togo (+25.8%), Burundi (+13.9%), Lesotho (+11.2%), Rwanda (+10.5%), Uganda (+5.6%) and Senegal (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Algeria (-2.2%), Mauritius (-6.1%), South Africa (-7.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (-7.7%) and Tanzania (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+18 p.p.), Ghana (+10 p.p.), Rwanda (+7.1 p.p.), Uganda (+5.3 p.p.), Lesotho (+2.9 p.p.), Togo (+2.9 p.p.) and Burundi (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-4.7 p.p.), Tanzania (-6.4 p.p.) and South Africa (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest wheat and meslin flour supplier in Africa, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled +11.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Rwanda (+10.3% per year) and South Africa (-5.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wheat and meslin flour export price increased by +61.1% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
For the fifth consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in supplies from abroad of wheat and meslin flour, which decreased by -4.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wheat and meslin flour imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Somalia (X tons), distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), Angola (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented the largest importers of wheat and meslin flour, together committing 67% of total imports. Eritrea (X tons), Benin (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Niger (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guinea-Bissau (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wheat and meslin flour importing markets in Africa were Somalia ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Sudan ($X), together comprising 36% of total imports. Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, South Africa, Niger and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
Among the main importing countries, Guinea-Bissau, with a CAGR of +19.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
