The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 169%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheat gluten exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 123%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together comprising a 16% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheat gluten exports from South Africa stood at +2.8%. At the same time, Botswana (+70.1%), Nigeria (+41.1%) and Zambia (+31.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +70.1% from 2012-2022. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-33.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia and Botswana increased by +60, +7.9, +5.4, +2.8 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wheat gluten supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+43.9% per year) and Senegal (-0.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 101%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of wheat gluten decreased by -21.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 104% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together constituting a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Cameroon (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - each resulted at a 4% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheat gluten imports, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+17.5%), Egypt (+11.8%) and South Africa (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +52 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat gluten in Africa, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +44.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+7.3% per year) and Egypt (+14.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 32% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
