Wheat Starch Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the African wheat starch market, when its value decreased by -14% to $X. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +55.1% against 2013 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, wheat starch production fell notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

For the fourth consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of wheat starch, which decreased by -37.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 195% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat starch exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mauritania (X tons) was the main exporter of wheat starch, making up 43% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together generating a 50% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Mauritania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wheat starch. At the same time, Botswana (+86.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +86.6% from 2012-2021. Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.7%), South Africa (-16.2%) and Egypt (-33.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mauritania, Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania and Botswana increased by +43, +15, +4.4, +4.4 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest wheat starch supplier in Africa, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -18.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-36.2% per year) and Ethiopia (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -63.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of wheat starch, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat starch imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 172%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together creating 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing a 5.5% share of total imports. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +46.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat starch in Africa, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.1% share.

In Nigeria, wheat starch imports increased at an average annual rate of +58.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+38.2% per year) and Egypt (-2.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wheat starch import price increased by +79.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
