Whey Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African whey market increased by 19% to $X, rising for the sixth consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Whey Production in Africa

In value terms, whey production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 90%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Whey Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of whey, when their volume decreased by -7.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whey exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 121%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 55% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (14%) and Uganda (10%). The following exporters - Zambia (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.7% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+75.2%), Kenya (+72.4%), Uganda (+44.7%), Swaziland (+35.1%), Egypt (+34.5%) and Tunisia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +75.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kenya, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia increased by +14, +13, +10 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest whey supplier in Africa, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +5.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uganda (+66.4% per year) and Kenya (+58.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a measured increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+15.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of whey in Africa soared to X tons, picking up by 23% on the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, whey imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of whey imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together resulting at 54% of total import. Algeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.2% share, followed by Ghana (9.1%), Morocco (7.8%) and Tunisia (5.2%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +26.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 59% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
