Whisky Market Size in Africa
The African whisky market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Whisky Production in Africa
In value terms, whisky production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were exported in Africa; which is down by -2.9% on the year before. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, whisky exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 117%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X litres), distantly followed by Zambia (X litres), Rwanda (X litres), Angola (X litres) and Kenya (X litres) were the main exporters of whisky, together mixing up 82% of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X litres) and Cote d'Ivoire (X litres) - each accounted for a 4.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +87.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest whisky supplier in Africa, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+9.4% per year) and Angola (+5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, growing by 7.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, whisky export price increased by +45.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 84%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+24.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
Whisky imports expanded notably to X litres in 2022, surging by 12% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, whisky imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importer of whisky in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X litres, which was near 31% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Kenya (8.4%), Burkina Faso (7.1%), Ghana (5.8%) and Rwanda (5.3%). Morocco (X litres), Tanzania (X litres), Angola (X litres), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), Togo (X litres), Congo (X litres) and Swaziland (X litres) took a little share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of whisky. At the same time, Rwanda (+36.8%), Kenya (+17.0%), Burkina Faso (+14.6%), Tanzania (+11.8%), Ghana (+11.3%), Swaziland (+10.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.8%), Congo (+5.6%), Morocco (+5.4%), Nigeria (+3.2%) and Togo (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (+6.4 p.p.), Rwanda (+5 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+4.9 p.p.), Ghana (+3.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-8.9 p.p.) and Angola (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whisky in Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 6.2% share.
In South Africa, whisky imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+15.0% per year) and Nigeria (+6.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, reducing by -5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 4% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per litre), while Burkina Faso ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+13.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
