Sudan, South Africa, South Sudan, Algeria, Tanzania, Mozambique, Morocco, Somalia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Whole Fresh Milk Exports

Exports in Africa

Whole fresh milk exports shrank slightly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -3.6% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 43%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 90% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +50.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest whole fresh milk supplying countries in Africa were Uganda ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of +46.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Rwanda ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) and Uganda ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of whole fresh milk decreased by -4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Libya (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented roughly 43% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Mauritania (X tons) and Angola (X tons). All these countries together took near 20% share of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest whole fresh milk importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Kenya ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Kenya, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
