Wine Market Size in Africa
After two years of growth, the African wine market decreased by -3.9% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Wine Production in Africa
In value terms, wine production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 18%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, shipments abroad of wine increased by 30% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X litres, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Togo (X litres), making up a 5.1% share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wine. At the same time, Togo (+93.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo increased by +5.1 percentage points.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wine supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, dropping by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Togo totaled $X per litre.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.2%).
Wine Imports
Imports in Africa
Wine imports surged to X litres in 2021, with an increase of 31% against 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild slump. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), distantly followed by Angola (X litres), Ghana (X litres), Guinea-Bissau (X litres), Algeria (X litres) and Togo (X litres) represented the key importers of wine, together generating 57% of total imports. Morocco (X litres), Burkina Faso (X litres), Gabon (X litres), Cameroon (X litres), Equatorial Guinea (X litres), Kenya (X litres) and Nigeria (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +21.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Angola ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 30% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cameroon, Gabon, Morocco, Kenya, Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 34%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2021, surging by 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per litre), while Burkina Faso ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
