For the fourth year in a row, the African wood charcoal market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.4% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Wood Charcoal Production in Africa

In value terms, wood charcoal production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 47%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, wood charcoal exports in Africa contracted significantly to X tons, falling by -40.7% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest exporter of wood charcoal in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 56% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (11%). The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - each finished at a 3.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+23.5%), South Africa (+8.4%) and Ghana (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+30 p.p.), South Africa (+19 p.p.), Egypt (+2 p.p.), Ghana (+1.6 p.p.) and Benin (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by Ghana and Benin, which together accounted for a further 2.4%.

Benin, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood charcoal export price increased by +60.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Wood charcoal imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 23% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +84.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 278% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Egypt (X tons) and Libya (X tons) - each finished at a 3.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood charcoal imports into South Africa stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Egypt (+35.5%) and Libya (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +35.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt increased by +1.6 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood charcoal in Africa, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Libya ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +6.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Libya (+17.1% per year) and Egypt (+28.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 239%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
