In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates agglomerates structure, reaching X cubic meters, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X cubic meters), comprising an 8.8% share of total exports. Ghana (X cubic meters) and Mozambique (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+30.5%) and Swaziland (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+7.4 p.p.), Swaziland (+3.1 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplier in Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +1.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+15.6% per year) and Ghana (-9.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -22.3% to X cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 275%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X cubic meters) and Botswana (X cubic meters) represented the largest importers of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates in 2021, accounting for approx. 29% and 22% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Sudan (X cubic meters), making up an 11% share of total imports. Morocco (X cubic meters), Zimbabwe (X cubic meters), Mauritania (X cubic meters), Swaziland (X cubic meters), Egypt (X cubic meters), Algeria (X cubic meters), Kenya (X cubic meters), Mauritius (X cubic meters), Mozambique (X cubic meters) and Gambia (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sudan (with a CAGR of +54.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Sudan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 54% of total imports. Mauritania, Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Swaziland, Algeria, Mauritius, Mozambique, Gambia and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Among the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +47.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 219%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per cubic meter), while Zimbabwe ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+20.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
