The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of wood pulp, excluding mechanical wood pulp soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. At the same time, Ghana (+27.0%), Nigeria (+15.8%), Algeria (+13.6%), South Africa (+10.7%), Morocco (+4.7%) and Tunisia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012-2022. Algeria (+5 p.p.), South Africa (+3.3 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -3.1% and -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 66% of total imports. Tunisia, Nigeria, Morocco and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +27.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
