In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates, when their volume decreased by -15.5% to X cubic meters. In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X cubic meters) was the major exporter of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates, constituting 41% of total exports. Namibia (X cubic meters) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (15%) and Benin (11%). Swaziland (X cubic meters), Tunisia (X cubic meters) and Morocco (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates exports from Nigeria stood at +71.1%. At the same time, Benin (+83.3%), Namibia (+65.8%), Tunisia (+33.2%) and Morocco (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +83.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-19.6%) and South Africa (-20.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Namibia, Benin and Tunisia increased by +41, +20, +11 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Benin ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total exports.

Benin, with a CAGR of +95.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, declining by -16.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, export price for wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by +71.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by 47% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates agglomerates structure, accounting for X cubic meters, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X cubic meters), committing a 6.6% share of total imports. Sudan (X cubic meters) and Morocco (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates imports into South Africa stood at +6.8%. At the same time, Sudan (+65.6%), Morocco (+32.8%) and Botswana (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sudan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +65.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sudan and Botswana increased by +3.7 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates importing markets in Africa were Sudan ($X), South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports.

Sudan, with a CAGR of +87.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, waning by -28.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 61%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa (less than $X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
