In 2021, the African wooden frame market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +3.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -20.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Wooden frame imports fell slightly to X units in 2021, dropping by -2.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wooden frame imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria was the largest importer of wooden frames for paintings, photographs, mirrors or similar objects in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. Ethiopia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by South Africa (11%). Djibouti (X units), Uganda (X units), Morocco (X units), Senegal (X units) and Tanzania (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Djibouti (+46.1%), Ethiopia (+19.6%), Senegal (+6.5%), Morocco (+5.1%) and Uganda (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-4.7%) and Tanzania (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+16 p.p.), Ethiopia (+14 p.p.) and Djibouti (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.9% and -9.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Djibouti, Morocco, Tanzania, Uganda and Senegal, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +48.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
