In 2022, shipments abroad of wooden furniture for kitchens increased by 4.7% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wooden kitchen furniture exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa represented the main exporter of wooden furniture for kitchens in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Togo (X units), together making up a 26% share of total exports. Egypt (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Botswana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wooden furniture for kitchens. At the same time, Egypt (+32.0%), Mauritius (+29.2%), Togo (+25.1%), Morocco (+15.6%) and Botswana (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+7.7 p.p.), Togo (+6 p.p.), Egypt (+4.1 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.9% and -9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wooden kitchen furniture supplier in Africa, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, wooden kitchen furniture exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+25.6% per year) and Tunisia (-0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of wooden furniture for kitchens imported in Africa reduced to X units, which is down by -10.4% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wooden kitchen furniture imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Morocco (X units), Libya (X units), Ghana (X units) and Algeria (X units) were the key importers of wooden furniture for kitchens, together mixing up 57% of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Kenya (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Angola (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zambia (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - together made up 20% of total imports.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Libya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 35% of total imports. Ghana, Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Mauritius, Senegal, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Angola and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +28.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
