Wooden Particle Board Market Size in Africa
In 2021, the African wooden particle board market increased by 0.5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of wooden particle board decreased by -33.7% to X cubic meters, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wooden particle board exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X cubic meters) represented roughly 95% of total exports in 2021.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wooden particle board. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +44 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest wooden particle board supplier in Africa.

In 2021, the amount of wooden particle board imported in Africa skyrocketed to X cubic meters, surging by 18% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wooden particle board imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Botswana (X cubic meters) and Uganda (X cubic meters) represented the major importers of wooden particle board in 2021, resulting at approx. 20% and 18% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X cubic meters), Swaziland (X cubic meters), Lesotho (X cubic meters) and Angola (X cubic meters), together constituting a 29% share of total imports. Senegal (X cubic meters), Namibia (X cubic meters), Mauritius (X cubic meters), Ethiopia (X cubic meters), Madagascar (X cubic meters), Djibouti (X cubic meters) and Tunisia (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +52.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wooden particle board in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Botswana stood at +28.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-1.9% per year) and Swaziland (+7.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per cubic meter), while Uganda ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+16.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
