Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 104% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, worked slate exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), committing a 14% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+1,688.6%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +1,688.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Benin (+14 p.p.), South Africa (+2.1 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest worked slate supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -7.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (+68.4% per year) and Tanzania (-5.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of worked slate were imported in Africa; dropping by -27.6% compared with the year before. Overall, imports saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, worked slate imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of worked slate, namely Mauritius, South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Cameroon, Senegal, Comoros, Libya, Nigeria and Congo, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Gabon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cameroon (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest worked slate importing markets in Africa were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 32% of total imports. Mauritius, Libya, Algeria, Sudan, Comoros, Cameroon, Senegal, Nigeria, Congo and Gabon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.
Among the main importing countries, Cameroon, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Gabon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+16.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
