The African woven carpet market amounted to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, woven carpet production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 57%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings decreased by -9.7% to X square meters, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, woven carpet exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 99%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X square meters) was the key exporter of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, creating 61% of total exports. Tunisia (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Morocco (13%) and South Africa (6.3%).
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+45.0%) and Morocco (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+16 p.p.) and Morocco (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3% and -16.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest woven carpet supplier in Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.1% share.
In Egypt, woven carpet exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+14.9% per year) and Tunisia (+31.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2022, shrinking by -14.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per square meter), while Tunisia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings imported in Africa declined remarkably to X square meters, dropping by -17.6% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, woven carpet imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Libya (X square meters) was the major importer of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, comprising 36% of total imports. Algeria (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters), Sudan (X square meters) and Kenya (X square meters). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports. Tunisia (X square meters), Mauritania (X square meters), Somalia (X square meters) and Cameroon (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Libya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings. At the same time, Cameroon (+26.4%), Somalia (+25.2%), Tunisia (+19.9%), Sudan (+18.9%), Kenya (+13.4%), Mauritania (+12.7%), Morocco (+7.5%) and Algeria (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sudan (+4.6 p.p.), Kenya (+3.6 p.p.), Somalia (+3.4 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.3 p.p.), Cameroon (+3 p.p.), Morocco (+2.9 p.p.) and Mauritania (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-8.5 p.p.) and Libya (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest woven carpet importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Morocco ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports. South Africa, Algeria, Mauritania, Sudan, Somalia, Tunisia and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
Cameroon, with a CAGR of +19.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 7.4% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per square meter), while Algeria ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
