After two years of growth, the African flax fabric market decreased by -50.3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, flax fabric production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 50%. In 2022, Tunisia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of woven fabrics of flax, achieving 68% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took near 32% share of total exports.

Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +22.0% from 2020 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+252.1%) and Egypt (+155.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +252.1% from 2020-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-31.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2020 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Tunisia and Egypt increased by +8.5, +8 and +7.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest flax fabric supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 13% share.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+122.9% per year) and Morocco (-41.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -8.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep setback. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-12.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Morocco was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together creating a 17% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) - together made up 7.8% of total imports.

From 2020 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to flax fabric imports into Morocco stood at +68.4%. At the same time, Rwanda (+500.4%), Egypt (+85.5%), Mauritius (+47.5%), South Africa (+33.2%), Madagascar (+32.7%) and Tunisia (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +500.4% from 2020-2022. Morocco (+14 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -12.3% from 2020 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven fabrics of flax in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 4.9% share.

From 2020 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco amounted to +56.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+1.2% per year) and South Africa (+21.9% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -14.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 a decrease of -0.3%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
