In 2021, overseas shipments of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 39%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, man-made filament fabric exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +58.9% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Egypt (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) were the major exporters of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers in 2021, accounting for near 27% and 25% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest man-made filament fabric supplier in Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Gambia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 12% share.
In Egypt, man-made filament fabric exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (+1.1% per year) and Tunisia (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, man-made filament fabric export price increased by +20.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -5.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, man-made filament fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers, namely Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Tunisia, Somalia, Senegal, Togo and Nigeria, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Djibouti (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest man-made filament fabric importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 46% of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, Somalia, Ghana, Senegal, Djibouti, Nigeria and Togo, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +26.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
