After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste decreased by -17% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 746% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, silk fabric imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste in Africa, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.

In Madagascar, silk fabric imports expanded at an average annual rate of +46.4% over the period from 2012-2021.
