The African woolen fabric market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, woolen fabric production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
Woolen fabric exports declined to X square meters in 2021, with a decrease of -11.9% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 55%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, woolen fabric exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Morocco represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X square meters, which amounted to 47% of total exports. Egypt (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Tunisia (2%), Mali (4.6%) and South Africa (26%). The following exporters - Benin (X square meters), Lesotho (X square meters) and Tunisia (X square meters) - each finished at a 5.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +68.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest woolen fabric supplier in Africa, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.
In Morocco, woolen fabric exports declined by an average annual rate of -6.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (-7.3% per year) and South Africa (-8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2021, growing by 56% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per square meter), while Lesotho ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of woven woolen fabrics were finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, woolen fabric imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Morocco dominates imports structure, resulting at X square meters, which was near 83% of total imports in 2021. Egypt (X square meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X square meters). All these countries together took near 5.9% share of total imports. Mauritius (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters) and Senegal (X square meters) held a little share of total imports.
Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven woolen fabrics imports, with a CAGR of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-1.6%), Senegal (-2.3%), Tunisia (-10.9%), Mauritius (-19.2%) and Egypt (-27.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+27 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius, Tunisia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -11.2% and -12.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven woolen fabrics in Africa, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco totaled +4.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (-10.2% per year) and South Africa (-4.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, waning by -13.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.5%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
