The African x-ray apparatus market soared to $X in 2022, jumping by 39% against the previous year. In general, consumption posted a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, x-ray apparatus production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 164% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of x-ray apparatus decreased by -73.2% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 467%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, x-ray apparatus exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), comprising a 7.6% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the x-ray apparatus exports, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+12.2%) and Egypt (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+18 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest x-ray apparatus supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 2.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+20.9% per year) and Egypt (-17.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 266% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

X-ray apparatus imports surged to X units in 2022, picking up by 30% compared with the year before. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 79%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, x-ray apparatus imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +124.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 45% of total imports. South Africa (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X units) and Algeria (X units). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X units), Libya (X units), Kenya (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+31.9%), Nigeria (+29.5%), Mozambique (+27.1%), Morocco (+26.5%), Libya (+10.7%), Algeria (+9.5%) and Kenya (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Morocco, Botswana, Nigeria and Algeria increased by +19, +6.8, +2.4, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest x-ray apparatus importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 34% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Kenya, Mozambique and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +40.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -12.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 104%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
