The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, exports of x-ray tubes in Africa stood at X units, surging by 8.8% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, x-ray tube exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 47%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X units), mixing up a 5.7% share of total exports. Nigeria (X units), Morocco (X units), Libya (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Senegal (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+29.2%), Senegal (+27.7%) and Nigeria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012-2021. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-3.1%) and Libya (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+1.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-4.5 p.p.) and Libya (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest x-ray tube supplier in Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +7.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+0.6% per year) and Nigeria (+14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 63%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

X-ray tube imports surged to X units in 2021, jumping by 104% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray tube imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of x-ray tube imports in 2021 were Nigeria (X units), South Africa (X units) and Egypt (X units), together finishing at 62% of total import. Morocco (X units) held a 7.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (6.1%). Ethiopia (X units), Algeria (X units), Libya (X units), Namibia (X units) and Kenya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest x-ray tube importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Morocco, Algeria, Namibia, Libya, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +24.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -15% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, x-ray tube import price decreased by -16.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
