In 2021, the African man-made filament yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Exports in Africa
In 2021, man-made filament yarn exports in Africa contracted dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -15.4% against the previous year. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +30.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, man-made filament yarn exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 157%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 63% of total exports. Uganda (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Tunisia (6%), Swaziland (5.8%) and Senegal (5%). The following exporters - Benin (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - each reached a 4.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to man-made filament yarn exports from Egypt stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Uganda (+40.0%), Senegal (+19.7%), Tunisia (+9.9%) and Benin (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.0% from 2012-2021. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Uganda, Senegal and Tunisia increased by +25, +9.8, +3.7 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest man-made filament yarn supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 7.6% share.
In Egypt, man-made filament yarn exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+22.5% per year) and Tunisia (+8.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Man-Made Filament Yarn Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, imports of man-made filament yarn in Africa shrank slightly to X tons, which is down by -4.6% compared with the year before. In general, imports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 69%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, man-made filament yarn imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main importers of man-made filament yarn, together committing 61% of total imports. Djibouti (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Angola (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +32.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported man-made filament yarn in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.7% share.
In Egypt, man-made filament yarn imports declined by an average annual rate of -14.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+10.0% per year) and South Africa (+2.9% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 61%.
