Yoghurt Market Size in Africa
The African yoghurt market fell to $X in 2022, reducing by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Yoghurt Production in Africa
In value terms, yoghurt production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Yoghurt Exports
Exports in Africa
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of yoghurt increased by 5.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, yoghurt exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), creating an 11% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Benin (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+83.1%), Senegal (+74.5%), Zimbabwe (+53.2%), Ghana (+40.8%), Egypt (+35.8%), Nigeria (+14.4%) and Uganda (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +83.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-6.3%), Algeria (-8.1%) and Tunisia (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+11 p.p.), Senegal (+3.7 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.2 p.p.), Benin (+2.2 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Algeria (-2 p.p.), Morocco (-2.1 p.p.), South Africa (-2.4 p.p.) and Tunisia (-17.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest yoghurt supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -2.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+41.9% per year) and Morocco (-6.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -8.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of yoghurt decreased by -0.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, yoghurt imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Botswana (X tons), distantly followed by Libya (X tons), Togo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the main importers of yoghurt, together making up 69% of total imports. The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Mali (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to yoghurt imports into Botswana stood at +7.8%. At the same time, Togo (+87.0%), Mali (+29.3%), Ghana (+29.0%), Malawi (+14.3%), Mozambique (+13.0%), Lesotho (+5.6%), Namibia (+3.9%), Cabo Verde (+2.4%) and Swaziland (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +87.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritania (-6.0%), Libya (-6.4%) and Angola (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana, Togo, Ghana, Mozambique and Mali increased by +11, +7.2, +4.2, +4 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yoghurt in Africa, comprising 19% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 9.1% share.
In Botswana, yoghurt imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+11.3% per year) and Libya (-8.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -8.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
