From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Algeria
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup, when their volume decreased by -48.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, lactose imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 129% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
France (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactose imports to Algeria, with a combined 60% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +37.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest lactose suppliers to Algeria, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Denmark, Germany, Spain and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

In 2022, the average lactose import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 49% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
