Maize Market Size in Algeria

After two years of decline, the Algerian maize market increased by 6.6% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Maize Production in Algeria

In value terms, maize production shrank rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 119%. Maize production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of maize in Algeria rose modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 2.4% on 2021. Overall, the yield posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 2,417% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Niger (X tons) was the main destination for maize exports from Algeria, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of maize was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to Algeria, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), threefold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Argentina amounted to +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+16.6% per year) and Ukraine (-1.3% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Algeria, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+12.8% per year) and Ukraine (-4.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -13.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Brazil ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Paraguay ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
