Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 322%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Greece (X kg), Sri Lanka (X kg) and Belgium (X kg) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Algeria, together comprising 100% of total exports.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) increased by 37% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 349% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 350%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Algeria, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Bulgaria, Zambia, Tanzania, Thailand, Malawi, China, Italy, Zimbabwe and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +74.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Algeria were Bangladesh ($X), Greece ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), together comprising 42% of total imports. In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 23% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 58%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
