Watch Market Size in Algeria

The Algerian watch market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -11.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of watches, when their volume decreased by -21.4% to X units. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 2,506% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, watch exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 296%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

The United Arab Emirates (X units) was the main destination for watch exports from Algeria, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, watch exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (X units), with a 5.6% share.

In 2021, the average watch export price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -35.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 1,500% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+16.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Algeria

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of watches, when their volume increased by 18% to X units. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 97%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watch imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Poland (X units) were the main suppliers of watch imports to Algeria, together comprising 92% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +38.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while the price for Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
