Toy Market Size in Angola

The Angolan toy market shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -11.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, toy production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 119% against the previous year. Toy production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of dolls and toys, when their volume increased by 32% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toy exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique (X kg), Portugal (X kg) and Malawi (X kg) were the main destinations of toy exports from Angola, with a combined 56% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +113.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), Mozambique ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for toy exported from Angola worldwide, with a combined 54% share of total exports.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +74.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average toy export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 87% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (+44.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Angola

In 2021, purchases abroad of dolls and toys increased by 77% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toy imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest toy supplier to Angola, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, toy imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), sevenfold. Portugal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+19.4% per year) and Portugal (-20.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dolls and toys to Angola, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Portugal ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-18.9% per year) and South Africa (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average toy import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, toy import price increased by +23.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 50%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
