Leather Footwear Market Size in Angola

The Angolan leather footwear market rose markedly to $X in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, saw temperate growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Leather Footwear Exports

Exports from Angola

In 2021, approx. X tons of leather footwear were exported from Angola; which is down by -16.5% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 135% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sao Tome and Principe (X kg), Portugal (X kg) and Mozambique (X kg) were the main destinations of leather footwear exports from Angola, together accounting for 50% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Brazil, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, South Africa, Namibia and Austria, which together accounted for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +78.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Sao Tome and Principe ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest markets for leather footwear exported from Angola worldwide, together comprising 43% of total exports. Portugal, Switzerland, Brazil, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Among the main countries of destination, Switzerland, with a CAGR of +181.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average leather footwear export price amounted to $X per kg, which is down by -36.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per kg in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+66.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Angola

In 2021, supplies from abroad of leather footwear decreased by -9.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 47%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather footwear imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest leather footwear supplier to Angola, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, leather footwear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +11.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-12.4% per year) and Brazil (-21.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather footwear to Angola, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Portugal ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-13.7% per year) and Brazil (-25.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average leather footwear import price stood at $X per kg in 2021, picking up by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per kg in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per kg), while the price for Brazil ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
