Maize imports into Angola contracted dramatically to X tons in 2022, falling by -34.9% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 278%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, maize imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 271%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Angola, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X tons), with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Argentina stood at +21.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+28.4% per year) and South Africa (+27.4% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Angola, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina amounted to +17.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+34.8% per year) and South Africa (+16.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
