Mattress Market Size in Angola

The Angolan mattress market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mattress production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Mattress production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of mattresses decreased by -16.9% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, mattress exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Sao Tome and Principe (X units) and the United States (X units) were the main destinations of mattress exports from Angola, with a combined 74% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sao Tome and Principe (with a CAGR of +53.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sao Tome and Principe ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest markets for mattress exported from Angola worldwide, together accounting for 80% of total exports.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mattress export price increased by +118.6% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Angola

After four years of decline, overseas purchases of mattresses increased by 32% to X units in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a dramatic descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 37%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mattress imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 68%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Portugal (X units) constituted the largest supplier of mattress to Angola, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, mattress imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X units), fourfold. Namibia (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Portugal stood at -14.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-10.8% per year) and Namibia (-30.5% per year).

In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mattresses to Angola, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Portugal totaled -10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-27.5% per year) and South Africa (-5.4% per year).
