After two years of decline, the Angolan pumpkin market increased by 166% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a resilient increase. Pumpkin consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds) increased by 4.3% to X kg, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Bahamas (X kg), Slovenia (X kg) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg) were the main destinations of pumpkin exports from Angola, together accounting for 90% of total exports. Malta and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.2%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malta (with a CAGR of +21.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Slovenia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for pumpkin (squash and gourds) exports from Angola, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahamas ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Malta, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bahamas (-30.2% per year) and Malta (+24.6% per year).

In 2022, the average pumpkin export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 42% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Angola
In 2022, overseas purchases of pumpkin (squash and gourds) increased by 236% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 244% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 293%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest pumpkin supplier to Angola, with a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, pumpkin imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Africa totaled +31.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+17.1% per year) and Namibia (-24.5% per year).
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pumpkin (squash and gourds) to Angola, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Africa stood at +26.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+19.6% per year) and Namibia (-25.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average pumpkin import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -41.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
