Salt Market Size in Angola
The Angolan salt market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, surging by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +26.6% against 2017 indices. Salt consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Angola
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -65.3% to X kg in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 892%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, salt exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 743% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The UK (X kg) was the main destination for salt exports from Angola, with a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by France (X kg), with a 0.2% share of total exports.
From 2014 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK stood at +23.8%.
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for salt and pure sodium chloride exports from Angola, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 0.5% share of total exports.
From 2014 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the UK amounted to +10.9%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average salt export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK totaled $X per ton.
From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+122.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Salt Imports
Imports into Angola
In 2022, the amount of salt and pure sodium chloride imported into Angola soared to X tons, growing by 158% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, salt imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 211% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main suppliers of salt imports to Angola, with a combined 86% share of total imports. India and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.2%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +13.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest salt suppliers to Angola were Portugal ($X), China ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports. Belgium and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.6%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +12.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
The average salt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -19.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
