Market Size for Caustic Soda in the Solid Form in Angola

In 2021, the Angolan market for caustic soda in the solid form was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild increase. Consumption of peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 115%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of caustic soda in the solid form contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 286%. Over the period under review, the exports of caustic soda in solid form hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique (X tons) was the main destination for exports of caustic soda in the solid form from Angola, with a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of caustic soda in the solid form to Mozambique exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Congo (X kg), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mozambique was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Congo (-13.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-50.1% per year).

In value terms, Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for caustic soda in the solid form exports from Angola, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of caustic soda in the solid form imported into Angola dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -5.6% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -38.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of caustic soda in solid form attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of caustic soda in the solid form expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of caustic soda in the solid form to Angola, with a 20% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of caustic soda in the solid form from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Portugal (X tons), with an 8% share.

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+65.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
