In 2022, the Angolan umbrella and walking-stick market increased by 1.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a precipitous setback. Umbrella and walking-stick consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a sharp slump. Sao Tome and Principe (X units) was the main destination for umbrella and walking-stick exports from Angola, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, umbrella and walking-stick exports to Sao Tome and Principe exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), more than tenfold. South Africa (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sao Tome and Principe totaled +35.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.3% per year) and South Africa (-29.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for umbrella and walking-stick exported from Angola were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Sao Tome and Principe ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +4.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Angola

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of umbrellas and walking-sticks, when their volume increased by 29% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 147% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of umbrella and walking-stick to Angola, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, umbrella and walking-stick imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X units), with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -19.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-20.6% per year) and South Africa (-19.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of umbrellas and walking-sticks to Angola, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to -15.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-22.4% per year) and South Africa (-24.3% per year).

In 2022, the average umbrella and walking-stick import price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -35.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 137% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the price for the United States ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
