In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of watermelons, when their volume increased by 346% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1,932%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, watermelon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 1,799%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Congo (X tons), South Africa (X kg) and Namibia (X kg) were the main suppliers of watermelon imports to Angola, with a combined 92% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +33.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Congo ($X) constituted the largest supplier of watermelons to Angola, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Congo stood at +2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-4.6% per year) and the United States (-8.0% per year).
