The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. In 2022, Ecuador (X tons) constituted the largest banana supplier to Argentina, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, banana imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bolivia (X tons), twofold. Brazil (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ecuador was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bolivia (+3.2% per year) and Brazil (+9.1% per year).
In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas to Argentina, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bolivia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ecuador totaled +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bolivia (+8.5% per year) and Brazil (+16.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average banana import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while the price for Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
