Barley Market Size in Argentina

The Argentinian barley market shrank markedly to $X in 2022, declining by -68.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a deep contraction. Barley consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Argentina, with a 62% share of total exports. In 2022, purchases abroad of barley decreased by 99.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports showed a dramatic setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 7,081%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, barley imports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 26,691% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest barley supplier to Argentina, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X kg), with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France amounted to -16.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (-37.6% per year) and the United States (+2.6% per year).
