Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 508% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X kg) was the main destination for cigars and cigarillos exports from Argentina, accounting for a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, cigars and cigarillos exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uruguay (X kg), with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR stood at +127.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+1.3% per year) and Uruguay (-23.9% per year).
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for cigars, cheroots and cigarillos exports from Argentina, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 0.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Hong Kong SAR stood at +113.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (-3.1% per year) and Uruguay (-33.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -17.3% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos export price increased by +50.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (-4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Argentina
In 2022, purchases abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -20.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Cuba (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of cigars and cigarillos imports to Argentina, together accounting for 53% of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, Nicaragua, Belgium and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nicaragua (with a CAGR of +12.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cuba ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos to Argentina, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Dominican Republic, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Cuba stood at +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+1.3% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+0.3% per year).

In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos import price decreased by +0.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cuba ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
