Mate Market Size in Argentina

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Argentinian mate market, when its value decreased by -3.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Mate Production in Argentina

In value terms, mate production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of mate in Argentina contracted to X tons per ha, approximately equating the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a buoyant increase. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) was the main destination for mate exports from Argentina, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, mate exports to Syrian Arab Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (X tons), ninefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Syrian Arab Republic was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (-14.2% per year) and Spain (-4.0% per year).

In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for mate exports from Argentina, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.3% share.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of mate decreased by -25.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 791% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mate imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 691%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Brazil (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) were the main suppliers of mate imports to Argentina.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mate to Argentina, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Paraguay ($X), with a 32% share of total imports.
