Molluscs Market Size in Argentina
In 2021, the Argentinian molluscs market increased by 5.6% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Molluscs Production in Argentina
In value terms, molluscs production dropped dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +29.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 59%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports from Argentina
In 2021, exports of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) from Argentina shrank markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -22.6% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, posted a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 85%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, molluscs exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of molluscs exports from Argentina, together comprising 64% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +36.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for molluscs exported from Argentina worldwide, with a combined 61% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, South Korea, with a CAGR of +37.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -22.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Spain ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Molluscs Imports
Imports into Argentina
In 2021, overseas purchases of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) increased by 31% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs to Argentina, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, molluscs imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Chile (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain amounted to +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+12.2% per year) and Chile (-19.6% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to Argentina, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+10.3% per year) and Portugal (+2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
