In 2021, the Argentinian sugars market increased by 18% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild contraction. Sugars consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of sugars, sugar ethers and salts increased by 75% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 223% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugars exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 186% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Philippines (X tons) was the main destination for sugars exports from Argentina, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, sugars exports to the Philippines exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Paraguay (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (X tons), with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Philippines amounted to +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Paraguay (+55.5% per year) and Mexico (+54.4% per year).
In value terms, Paraguay ($X), Colombia ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest markets for sugars exported from Argentina worldwide, with a combined 61% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Paraguay, with a CAGR of +52.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sugars export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -30.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sugars Imports
Imports into Argentina
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of sugars, sugar ethers and salts, when their volume increased by 36% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugars imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sugars to Argentina, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, sugars imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled -3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+14.8% per year) and Indonesia (+69.5% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest sugars suppliers to Argentina, with a combined 77% share of total imports. The United States, France, Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
Among the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +60.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sugars import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -13.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
