In value terms, activated natural mineral products production expanded to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of activated natural mineral products decreased by -9.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -24.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products exports contracted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -26.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia was the major exporter of activated natural mineral products in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Malaysia (13%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated natural mineral products exports from Indonesia stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Thailand (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-10.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest activated natural mineral products supplier in ASEAN, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In Indonesia, activated natural mineral products exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-1.8% per year) and Thailand (+9.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Activated Natural Mineral Products

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of activated natural mineral products were imported in ASEAN; rising by 20% compared with the year before. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main importer of activated natural mineral products, committing 42% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Malaysia (17%) and the Philippines (6.7%). The following importers - Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each accounted for an 8.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 3.8%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
