Aluminium Foil Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the ASEAN aluminium foil market, when its value decreased by -0.7% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Aluminium Foil Production in ASEAN

In value terms, aluminium foil production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, overseas shipments of aluminium foil increased by 40% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium foil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main exporter of aluminium foil, constituting 55% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium foil exports from Thailand stood at +32.0%. At the same time, the Philippines (+46.5%), Indonesia (+15.6%) and Vietnam (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +46.5% from 2012-2021. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+41 p.p.) and the Philippines (+9.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -11.9% and -39.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest aluminium foil supplier in ASEAN, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at +25.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+2.2% per year) and Indonesia (+15.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Aluminium Foil Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of aluminium foil were imported in ASEAN; picking up by 17% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +103.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium foil imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +21.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Thailand represented the key importer of aluminium foil in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 45% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium foil imports into Thailand stood at +10.1%. At the same time, Indonesia (+13.2%), Vietnam (+8.5%), Malaysia (+7.2%) and Singapore (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+6.3 p.p.) and Indonesia (+6.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-3.3 p.p.) and the Philippines (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aluminium foil importing markets in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +12.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight decline. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
