In 2021, the ASEAN iron angle market decreased by -8.5% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption saw a noticeable downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron angle exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the largest exporter of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (8.1%). Vietnam (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel). At the same time, Malaysia (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012-2021. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+6.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -7.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest iron angle supplier in ASEAN, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.5% share.

In Thailand, iron angle exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-4.9% per year) and Malaysia (+15.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 40% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Singapore ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) decreased by -17.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron angle imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) represented the largest importers of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel), together creating 97% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest iron angle importing markets in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 67% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +25.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 38% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
