The ASEAN market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander surged to $X in 2022, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +106.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Production of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander in ASEAN
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of anise, badian, fennel and coriander production was Vietnam (X tons), accounting for 99% of total volume.
In Vietnam, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production expanded at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
In 2022, the average yield of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in ASEAN was estimated at X kg per ha, picking up by 5.6% compared with 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 13%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the anise, badian, fennel and coriander harvested area in ASEAN dropped to X ha, waning by -6% compared with the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to anise, badian, fennel and coriander production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports in ASEAN reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -13.5% on the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 70%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 122% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Vietnam dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), constituting a 4.6% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+33.4%) and Indonesia (+19.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +33.4% from 2012-2022. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+24 p.p.) and Myanmar (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-6.3 p.p.) and Singapore (-21.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in ASEAN, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 2% share.
In Vietnam, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (-9.0% per year) and Malaysia (+7.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 59%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, supplies from abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander increased by 44% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the key importer of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, constituting 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together making up a 35% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +27.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander importing markets in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 81% of total imports. Vietnam and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -33% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
