The ASEAN antibiotic market expanded notably to $X in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antibiotic production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 248% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Antibiotic Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, approx. X tons of antibiotics were exported in ASEAN; reducing by -28.2% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, antibiotic exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.7% share, followed by Thailand (5.8%).
Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the antibiotics exports, with a CAGR of -5.5% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia (-6.2%) and Thailand (-17.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -12% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest antibiotic supplier in ASEAN, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.
In Singapore, antibiotic exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-6.6% per year) and Thailand (-10.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 72% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Antibiotic Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of antibiotics, when their volume increased by 5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, antibiotic imports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the largest importers of antibiotics in ASEAN, together achieving 62% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together committing a 35% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 84% share of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +2.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
